Carnegie Corporation of New York

A private philanthropic foundation founded in 1911 that grants capital for education, democracy, and peace, awarding 309 grants totalling $180 million in FY2024.

Carnegie Corporation of New York is a private philanthropic foundation established in 1911 with a founding endowment of $135 million, tasked by Andrew Carnegie with advancing and diffusing knowledge and understanding for the benefit of humanity. Headquartered in New York City and operating across the United States and worldwide, the Corporation deploys capital through grantmaking concentrated on education, democracy, and peace and conflict resolution. In fiscal year 2024 it awarded 309 grants totalling $180 million, an annual deployment that exceeds the original endowment several times over.

Two programmes illustrate the scale of the Corporation's capital deployment over time. The Carnegie Library Initiative funded the construction of more than 2,500 public libraries worldwide, of which 1,679 were built in the United States. The Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program, a contemporary grant scheme, awards up to $200,000 per fellow to scholars researching political polarization, extending the Corporation's historic funding model into applied social research.

Allocation discipline is explicit rather than reactive: the Corporation identifies organisations and invests in innovative projects directly, rather than accepting unsolicited applications, and prioritises measurable impact and lasting transformative change in its portfolio construction. Current strategic focus areas include reducing political polarization, building ladders of opportunity, and contributing to a more peaceful world, all framed by Andrew Carnegie's founding objective of advancing knowledge for humanity over more than a century of continuous operation.
