Not-for-profit investment manager overseeing more than $80 billion in endowment and related funds for The University of Texas System and The Texas A&M University System from Austin, Texas.
UTIMCO (The University/Investment Management Company) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) investment management corporation established in March 1996 in Austin, Texas. It manages endowment and other funds on behalf of The University of Texas System and The Texas A&M University System, with a mandate to generate long-term returns that support teaching, research, scholarships and patient healthcare. It was the first external investment corporation formed by a public university system in the United States, and its structure was modelled on the university investment management companies of Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Duke, adopting their operating practices.
The organisation oversees assets exceeding $80 billion, representing the largest public endowment fund in the nation. Capital is allocated across a set of distinct vehicles with defined horizons and purposes, including the Permanent University Fund, the Permanent Health Fund, the Long Term Fund, which is run to build purchasing power over time, and the Intermediate Term Fund. Investment activity spans portfolio management, asset allocation and long-term investment strategy, applied across endowment, institutional and healthcare-related mandates.
Governance is structured around a single objective: superior long-term returns in service of the two university systems' education, research and healthcare missions. This concentrates the investment team on multi-decade horizon management and intergenerational purchasing power rather than short-cycle performance, with exposure to public and private market asset classes consistent with large institutional endowment practice.
